Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

  1. I get extremely irritable when people announce that Remembrance Day (le Onze Novembre) or Armistice depending on where you are is about war – its about peace and celebrating those who gave their lives to preserve it. And still do because the bozos in charge have singularly failed to EVER learn the lessons of those that made the ultimate sacrifice and I fear they never will …..
